Compounded semaglutide is custom-made weight-loss medication made available through specialized pharmacies. If produced by a 503B facility, this medication has the same active ingredient as FDA-approved GLP-1 weight-loss medication.
How does WeightWatchers provide access to compounded semaglutide?
WeightWatchers Clinic clinicians only prescribe compounded semaglutide produced by a 503B outsourcing facility that is registered with the FDA and has been carefully inspected and vetted.
How does WeightWatchers address quality and safety?
WeightWatchers prioritizes the safety of the compounded GLP-1 weight-loss medications that clinicians prescribe. WeightWatchers Clinic clinicians only prescribe compounded GLP-1 weight-loss medications produced by a 503B outsourcing facility that we have vetted and inspected. By law, 503B facilities must meet certain standards:
1. The ingredients are sourced through official facilities. The facility must obtain active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) from FDA-registered facilities that adhere to Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMP). These practices aim to ensure the ingredients’ quality, potency, and purity, which are crucial for the safety and efficacy of compounded medications.
2. The ingredients are combined following specific protocols. The facility must compound the medication, package it, and label the final product in accordance with United States Pharmacopeia (USP) compounding standards for identity, strength, quality, purity, packaging, and labeling.
3. The facility meets the same manufacturing requirements as FDA-approved drug manufacturers. The facility must abide by the same manufacturing requirements imposed on manufacturers of FDA-approved drugs, namely, CGMP requirements. This helps to address accurate strength, labeling, and sterility and takes into account control of raw materials, facility design and maintenance, production techniques and controls, personnel practices, and testing samples of the finished drug product for quality before batch release.

Is compounded semaglutide covered by insurance?
Currently, compounded semaglutide is not covered by insurance. This option may be suitable for self-pay WW Clinic members, particularly those without insurance coverage or who are ineligible for the manufacturer's savings card for branded medications.

Quality and safety testing
The compounding facility provides a Certificate of Analysis (COA) for each batch of compounded semaglutide that’s produced. The COA confirms the quality of each batch and shows it has passed testing for potency, sterility, bacterial endotoxicity, particulate matter, pH, and appearance.

What is WeightWatchers Clinic?
WeightWatchers Clinic is a weight-loss program that couples behavior change with effective weight-loss medication. It provides members with ongoing, comprehensive access to a dedicated Care Team including doctors, nurse practitioners, registered dietitians, and fitness coaches; 1:1 virtual support; an award-winning app; and a supportive community.
What medication do you prescribe?
The exact medication that your Clinician will prescribe depends on your medical history, biology, and insurance coverage. When appropriate, your Clinician may prescribe GLP-1 medications, including semaglutide (brand name Wegovy), liraglutide (brand name Saxenda), or tirzepatide (brand name Zepbound). When appropriate, your clinician may prescribe other medications with which other members have found success such as Metformin and combination Naltrexone and Bupropion. If your treatment plan isn’t working for you, talk to your WeightWatchers Clinic Care Team about adjustments or alternative plans.

Is medication included in my membership fee?
It depends on your treatment plan. For branded GLP-1 medications, your medications are not included, but your Care Team will work with you to get your medication covered by insurance. If insurance covers your medication, you may still be responsible for a copay.
For compounded semaglutide, if you're eligible and your Clinican prescribes, your plan pricing will adjust based on your term length to include both your membership fee and estimated medication fee.
For non-GLP-1 medications, the cost of membership will include your estimated medication fee when you choose our preferred mail-order pharmacy, Carepoint.
