Everything you need to know about Mounjaro®
What is Mounjaro®?
Mounjaro® is the brand name for tirzepatide, a type of GLP-1 drug that’s administered weekly via self-injection for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Mounjaro® is FDA-approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
How does Mounjaro® work?
What makes tirzepatide unique is that it doesn’t just target the gut hormone known as GLP-1. It also targets another gut hormone, something called gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP), which functions in a similar way as GLP-1.
By mimicking the effects of both GLP-1 and GIP, Mounjaro® doubles down on their workload in the body. It tells your brain and your gut you’re satisfied, so you get fuller with less food.

Is Mounjaro® covered by insurance?
Your Clinic Care Team will work directly with your insurance provider to help you navigate your coverage of this GLP-1 medication. The cost of the medication is not included as part of the WeightWathcers Clinic membership and insurance coverage may vary.
At this time, our Insurance Coordinators can only work with commercial insurance plans.
This means that all members with government-sponsored insurance, on a Kaiser plan, or who do not have insurance will either have to pay out-of-pocket for a GLP-1 medication or use one of the prescription options that do not require insurance and are fully covered in the cost of WeightWatchers Clinic membership.
If you continue, you will be evaluated for the membership-included medications to see if your Clinician thinks you’re a good fit, or choose to pay without insurance for GLP-1 medications.

Common questions we hear
What is WeightWatchers Clinic?
WeightWatchers Clinic is a weight-loss program that couples behavior change with effective weight-loss medication. It provides members with ongoing, comprehensive access to a dedicated Care Team including doctors, nurse practitioners, registered dietitians, and fitness coaches; 1:1 virtual support; an award-winning app; and a supportive community.
What medication do you prescribe?
The exact medication that your Clinician will prescribe depends on your medical history, biology, and insurance coverage. When appropriate, your Clinician may prescribe GLP-1 medications, including semaglutide (brand name Wegovy), liraglutide (brand name Saxenda), or tirzepatide (brand name Zepbound). When appropriate, your clinician may prescribe other medications with which other members have found success such as Metformin and combination Naltrexone and Bupropion. If your treatment plan isn’t working for you, talk to your WeightWatchers Clinic Care Team about adjustments or alternative plans.
Please note, some GLP-1 medications are experiencing intermittent nationwide shortages. See which medications are affected on the FDA shortage database.

Is medication included in my membership fee?
It depends on your treatment plan. For GLP-1 medications, your medications are not included, but your Care Team will work with you to get your medication covered by insurance. If insurance covers your medication, you may still be responsible for a copay.
For compounded semaglutide, if you're eligible and your Clinican prescribes, your plan pricing will adjust based on your term length to include both your membership fee and estimated medication fee.
For non-GLP-1 medications, the cost of membership will include your estimated medication fee when you choose our preferred mail-order pharmacy, Carepoint.
