Ingredients

Cooking spray

4 spray(s)

Onion

1 cup(s), chopped

Garlic

4 clove(s), finely chopped

Canned tomatoes

56 oz, 2 (28-oz) cans, plum variety, undrained, coarsely chopped

Tomato paste

6 oz

Dried basil

1½ tsp

Dried oregano

1 tsp

Sugar

1 tsp

Table salt

½ tsp

Crushed red pepper flakes

¼ tsp, optional

Uncooked spaghetti

12 oz

Uncooked extra lean ground turkey breast

20 oz

Grated Parmesan cheese

2 Tbsp, or Romano cheese

Instructions

  1. Coat a medium pot with cooking spray and heat over medium-high. Add the onion and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the garlic and cook for 2 minutes. Add the tomatoes, tomato paste, basil, oregano, sugar, salt, and crushed red pepper (if using) and bring to a simmer. Simmer, uncovered, until the sauce has thickened, 25 to 35 minutes, stirring often.
  2. Cook the pasta according to the package directions. Drain the pasta and keep warm.
  3. Meanwhile, coat a 12-inch skillet with cooking spray and heat over medium-high. Add the turkey and cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon, until cooked through, about 10 minutes. Stir the turkey into the tomato sauce and cook for 5 minutes. Serve the sauce over the pasta and sprinkle with the cheese.
  4. Serving size: about 1 cup pasta and 1 cup meat sauce
