A guide to nutrition counseling

Here’s what to expect at your dietitian visit
Published July 1, 2024 | Updated May 5, 2024

A 1:1 video visit with a Registered Dietitian (RD) can help you improve your eating habits and build healthier habits while you’re:

  • Just getting started on a weight-loss journey
  • Working through plateaus or setbacks
  • Focusing on other health goals, such as heart or blood sugar health
  • Navigating food allergies or sensitivities

RDs are licensed healthcare providers

Specializing in the relationship between nutrition and health conditions, RDs provide personalized counseling that takes into account your medical history, dietary needs, lifestyle, journey, and health goals.

Personalized nutrition counseling

Based in medical nutrition therapy, these 60-minute video visits provide education, counseling, and a personalized treatment plan.

Most commercial insurers fully cover 4–12 visits per year.

When to schedule a dietitian visit

Meeting with your RD can be useful at any point in your journey!

  • In the first few months. Get familiar with the program and tools, establish weight and health goals, start making positive changes.
  • Throughout the journey. Help when you’re struggling to eat enough of the key nutrients for you, experiencing a setback like a weight regain or plateau, experiencing cravings or emotional eating, feeling low in motivation.
  • Approaching maintenance: Learn best practices to maintain your lower body weight.

Scheduling a dietitian visit

You and your RD will find the frequency that’s best for you. That said, nutrition counseling is most effective when done consistently — we recommend more frequently at the beginning.

Before your dietitian visit

✓ Spend a few minutes thinking about what you hope to get out of the visit. Is there a specific health or nutrition goal you want to work towards, a skill you want to learn, or a challenge you want to solve?

At your welcome visit

Your RD will:

  • Provide an overview of the WeightWatchers program to help you understand all of the program features and tools, and help you adjust your program settings to ensure that certain foods preferences and health conditions are taken into account.
  • Complete a comprehensive nutrition assessment to get a sense of your current routines and future goals.
  • Review your clinical labs to understand your health status.
  • Provide a personalized nutrition action plan that you can view any time in the Clinic tab nutrition plan.

At follow-up visits

Your RD will:

  • Welcome (5 min)
    • Assess your progress towards your goals.

  • Assessment (15 mins)

    • Check in on various components of health, including stress and emotional eating, gut checks, social support, and sleep.

    • Review your WeightWatchers food tracker data to see patterns in food choices, behaviors, and overall intake, identifying what’s working and what can be improved.

  • Counseling and education (15 mins)
    • Introduce a nutrition topic (like how to change your environment to make the healthiest option the easiest option) and share a technique to help you apply the knowledge.

  • Set goals (10 mins)
    • Together set 1-2 specific and actionable goals from meal planning to reviewing your fitness schedule.
  • Wrap up (15 mins)
    • Provide a post-visit action plan with a visit summary, personalized goals, and additional resources.

Other types of nutrition support

If you do not have qualifying insurance for nutrition counseling with an RD, there’s still many ways to connect with others for nutrition support.

All members can join a Connect group to find others with similar food preferences, lifestyles, or health conditions. Join a group (or a few groups) to share tips & recipes, celebrate successes and problem-solve challenges in a judgment-free, supportive community of other members who get it:

  • Food groups include communities for vegans, gluten free, cooking for 1, pescatarian, and more.
  • Identity groups include communities for members in different age groups, nursing moms, and college students.
  • Journey groups include communities for those aiming to lose different amounts of weight, those living with diabetes, thyroid conditions, or going through menopause, among others.

And if you have Workshop access, you can join a Virtual Workshop dedicated to What to Eat.

  • Fav Food Finds - Get inspiration from other members and WeightWatchers coaches on favorite go-to foods.
  • Kitchen Shortcuts- A WW coach will share time saving hacks and other strategies for quick and easy meals.
  • Foodies - Come swap recipes, strategize your next meal out, share food finds and more all while living the program.

Reminders

You need qualifying insurance to schedule a dietitian visit. At this time, we can only accept full coverage, we’re not able to accept co-pays or self-pay.

At the time of your dietitian visit, you must be located in the same state as the address associated with your membership. Many states require a RD to have a state license in the state where care is provided, so you’ve been matched to an RD with a license in your state.

Our cancellation/reschedule/no-show policy is 24 hours. If you cancel or reschedule less than 24 hours before your visit or are a no-show, a $99 fee will be automatically charged to your payment method on file.

We’ve partnered with Berry Street Health to allow insurance coverage for these dietitian visits. You’ll still meet with a WeightWatchers Clinic RD, but your visits will now be serviced through Berry Street Health.
