5 healthy habits to adopt now
1. Get outside as much as possible
Research shows that spending time in the great outdoors could have massive benefits for your mental and physical health, from reducing depression and stress levels to improving mood and self-esteem; there’s a series of treatment programmes based on this principle, called ecotherapy. Plus, taking part in activities such as gardening, community volunteering or events like parkrun could help you earn FitPoints® while boosting your social life.
2. Eat the rainbow
You’re probably already eating more fruit and veg than you used to, but remember to mix things up. By eating fresh produce in all the colours of the rainbow you’re more likely to get a good mix of natural compounds, known as phytochemicals, which make fruit and vegetables colourful. Some of these phytochemicals are antioxidants, which are associated with lower levels of cardiovascular disease.
3. Take time to relax
It can be hard to squeeze in rest time when you’re busy with work, family and social commitments. But relaxation is key to staying well and avoiding exhaustion and stress. Whether it’s participating in a hobby or gym class you love, taking a nap or having a bath, schedule in a bit of me-time every day. Find plenty of inspiring wellbeing ideas here.
4. Listen to your body
…it might have more to say than you think! Keeping yourself well is easier when you know what your body needs. Feeling sore? Try switching your usual high-intensity exercise for a stretch-based workout. Sluggish or bloated? Take a look at what you’ve eaten during the day and vow to make a balanced, healthy meal for dinner. Worn out? Take a break!
5. Ditch the guilt
We all slip up now and again, so if you’ve overdone it one day, draw a line under it and start again with your next meal. Beating yourself up over a mistake isn’t going to motivate you going forward – in fact, it could just make you feel defeated. Remember that you’re allowed to indulge occasionally too: from rollovers to your weekly allowance, there are plenty of ways to make room for treats!
