If you thought a smoky, mile-high burger was no longer in the mealtime cards, then say hello to this hot-off-the-grill favourite that ticks all the flavourful boxes. Ground turkey is mixed with seasonings, breadcrumbs and barbecue sauce, which adds tons of moisture and zesty flavour to the patties, while thick-cut onions caramelize and become as sweet as candy on the grill. Served with cheese and all the fixin's, this backyard burger is sure to satisfy. Add a few hamburger dill slices or pickled jalapeño slices to finish things off with a touch of tang or heat.

Ingredients

Cooking spray

4 spray(s)

Uncooked 93% lean ground turkey

1 pound(s)

Uncooked scallions

2 medium, sliced

Fresh breadcrumbs

¼ cup(s)

Barbecue sauce

5 tbsp(s), divided

Table salt

¾ tsp(s), divided

Onion

½ medium, sweet, cut into 4 (1⁄2-inch-thick) rounds

Shredded reduced-fat Mexican-style cheese

¼ cup(s)

Light whole wheat English muffin

4 muffin(s), toasted

Lettuce

4 leaf/leaves, large, or 1 cup shredded romaine

Tomato

½ large, cut into 4 thick slices

Instructions

  1. Off heat, coat grill rack or grill pan with nonstick spray. Preheat gas grill or grill pan to medium-high, or prepare medium-high fire in charcoal grill.
  2. In medium bowl, mix turkey, scallions, breadcrumbs, 3 tbsp plus 2 tsp barbecue sauce, and 1⁄2 tsp salt. Using damp hands (to prevent meat from sticking), form turkey into 4 (1⁄2-inch-thick) patties. Coat onion with nonstick spray and sprinkle with remaining 1⁄4 tsp salt.
  3. Grill patties and onion, turning once, until instant-read thermometer registers 165°F when inserted horizontally into patties and onion is lightly charred and tender, about 10 minutes. Transfer onion to plate. Turn off heat on gas grill (or grill pan), or move burgers to cooler side of charcoal grill. Sprinkle each burger with 1 tbsp cheese. Close lid and cook until cheese melts, about 1 minute.
  4. Build burgers with muffins, lettuce, tomato slices, patties, remaining barbecue sauce, and onion rounds.
  5. Serving size: 1 burger

Notes

These burgers can be made indoors on a grill pan coated with cooking spray.
