This dish needs no introduction; it is quite simply a classic beef burger to please the masses

Ingredients

Olive oil

3 tsp

Brown onion

1 medium, finely chopped

Extra lean beef mince, raw

400 g

Multigrain breadcrumbs

20 g

Extra light cheddar cheese

4 slice(s)

Wholemeal hamburger roll

4 individual

Butter lettuce

40 g, (4 leaves)

Tomato(es)

2 medium, sliced

Reduced sugar tomato sauce

¼ cup(s), (60ml)

Pickled cucumber, drained

4 individual, sliced in half vertically

American mustard

2 tbs

Oil spray

1 x 3 second spray(s)

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a large non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Add onion and cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until browned. Transfer to a large bowl.
  2. Add mince and breadcrumbs to onion. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Use clean hands to mix until well combined. Divide mixture into 4 portions, then shape each into a patty. Place patties on a large plate. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  3. Wipe out same frying pan. Lightly spray with oil and heat over medium heat. Add patties and cook for 5–6 minutes each side or until cooked through. Top each with a slice of cheese. Cover frying pan and cook for 1 minute or until cheese melts.
  4. Meanwhile, toast roll halves under a grill. Divide lettuce and tomato among roll bases, then top with patties, tomato sauce and pickles. Spread mustard on cut side of roll tops. Place on top of burgers to sandwich and serve.
