What is Zumba?


Zumba hit the fitness scene over 17 years ago –and it’s still going strong! Originally created by Colombian dancer and choreographer Alberto Perez in the mid-1990s, Zumba fuses fitness, entertainment and culture into the ultimate dance party experience.

“You’ll expend energy without feeling like you’re working out because you’re having so much fun,” says Zumba Education Specialist Maria Teresa Stone. “The beauty of Zumba is that the routines are easy to follow and most people catch on pretty fast.”


What are the fitness benefits?

Zumba is a full-body workout with fast and slow moves, so it’s great for maintaining your fitness and improving coordination. Sports scientists at the University of Wisconsin studied a small group of young women who were Zumba regulars and found that a single class uses, on average, more than 38kJ per minute, which they say is more than cardio kickboxing and step aerobics. It suits all ages and fitness levels, but the best thing about Zumba is that it gets you hooked and loving working out!
