Lightly sweetened, highly spiced apple slices bake until glossy and perfectly tender. They make a delicious topping for pancakes, waffles, oatmeal, or yogurt, or an easy pie filling. You can even improvise a quick individual apple crisp by warming a serving of apples in a ramekin and sprinkling with your favorite granola. We recommend using two kinds of apples for a great balance of flavor and texture: tart Granny Smiths, which become very soft, and sweet Honeycrisp, which remain slightly firmer.

Cooking spray

4 spray(s)

Apple

3 pound(s), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced

Packed brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Coat a 13 x 9–inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  2. In a large bowl, toss the apples with the sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg. Spoon the mixture into the prepared dish. Drizzle ¼ cup water over the apple mixture. Cover the dish with foil, and bake for 30 minutes.
